Fun Art Fact: Did you know that the “Thinker” by Auguste Rodin is not as big as you think it is? Did you know it is not where you thought it was either? That’s right. Most people think the “Thinker” is about 6 feet tall and located in Paris. While there is a bronze casting of the “Thinker” in Paris, the original scale (1880) was actually only about 72cm tall. Rodin had the sculpture expanded 22 years later by a professional reducteur named Henri Lebosse (1902). You see, Rodin created the sculpture as an allegorical portrait of poet Dante Alighieri for inclusion on his seminal “Gate of Hell”. He then had it expanded for the 1904 Louisville Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky… where it remains today. “Kentucky, you say?” Yup. Kentucky. All told, about 11 of the large “Great Thinker” were cast before the artist died in 1917. The Musee Rodin still produces them to fund their activities at a price of just under $2M USD. In the mid-1980’s a Japanese investor offered $100M for one of the lifetime casts… No one sold.

The Moore Building, Design District. March 7-12, 2012

Click ABOVE for video.

Dalí Miami is a celebration of perhaps the most extraordinary contributor to the art world of the 20th Century, Spanish Master Salvador Dalí. (1904-1989)

This first-of-its-kind exhibit took place March 7th -11th in Miami’s own architectural gem, The Moore Building in our Design District. The museum-level collection featured over 240 originals, prints, object d’art and editioned sculptures spanning the broad gamut of Dalí’s prolific career.

Salvador Dalí is considered by many to be the “Father of Surrealism”. Not only is he one of the greatest masters of art of the twentieth century, but his innovative thinking and spectacular draftsmanship created some of the most indelible images which have become synonymous with Art itself… The Melted Clock, the Don Quijote with sword raised, the Maternal Egg, the Freudian Drawers…. All images which are quintessentially Dalínian. The broad variety of media in which Dalí was known to have works, often surprises viewers and collectors. Our collection, culled together by renowned curator Reed V. Horth, of Robin Rile Fine Art (www.robinrile.com), represents some of the most prominent and historically significant works which remain under private ownership, outside of the museums in Spain and St. Petersburg, FL. This exhibition provided viewers with an unparalleled exposure to this master on a scale unavailable outside of the major museums of the world.
The Moore Building was the perfect location for such an exhibition due to its location in the heart of Miami’s famed Design District. This historic venue was built in 1921 (the height of Dalí’s fame) and is one of the most iconic spaces in all of Miami. The truly unique building boasts four floors of arcaded spaces, totaling more than 28,000 square feet.

If you ever felt Dalí was out of touch, out of reach, and just a bit crazy…
Let us open your eyes to the truths in all these things…. and more.

“At the age of six I wanted to be a cook. At seven I wanted to be Napoleon. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since”. ~ Salvador Dalí (1904-1989)

Jose Royo Biography

Born in 1945 in Valencia, Spain, Jose Mateu San Hilario, “Royo”, began demonstrating his artistic talent early. At the age of 9 his father, a prominent physician and avid art enthusiast, employed private tutors to instruct Royo in drawing, painting, and sculpture. When Royo turned 14 he entered the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. Upon turning 18 Royo continued his artistic studies privately with Aldolfo Ferrer Amblat, Chairman of Art Studies at the San Carlos Academy. He also visited the major museums in Europe at this time to study the famous masters – Velasquez, Goya, Renoir, Monet, and Sorolla among others.

During the mid-60′s and early 70′s Royo added more dimensions to his skills creating theatre sets and doing graphic illustration and restoration work. He also participated in several competitions gaining major distinctions. In 1968 he began to exhibit in Spain, specifically prestigious galleries in Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona. With positive reception of his works in Madrid, Royo received commissions to paint the royal portraits of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. He received subsequent commissions to paint the Judges of the High Magistrate and the Court of Justice as well as prominent political and society figures.

At the age of 25 Royo began feeling a growing desire to paint the land of his birth; to convey the light, the color and the intensity of Valencia and the Mediterranean. This meant a new focus and change of style in his work; he needed to perfect new ways to capture the light, the shadow and to work on classical composition styles. Through the 1980′s Royo perfected his style of painting the Mediterranean and exhibited abroad, notably in London, Brussels, Copenhagen and Paris. He also participated in the International Geneva Art Fair.

Beginning in 1989 and continuing until today we see the development of Royo’s “matured style”. His dramatic usage of color and “texturing” capture his subject matter with unique flair. Parallels can be drawn to the work of the European masters; for example, with Royo’s “homage to the female form,” we see the distinct influence of Renoir. It is the similar, almost portrait-like treatment of the female model, caught in a serene, contemplative moment, with the surrounding “bursts” of color from the floral landscapes where we see the “Renoir” in Royo’s work. In fact, critics have concluded, “If the artwork of Renoir were blended with that of the ‘Valencian painters’ you would arrive at the canvasses approaching the uniqueness of the impressive work of Royo.”

Impressive parallels can also be drawn between Royo’s work and that of the Spanish master, Joaquin Sorolla. Both were born in Valencia, both were classically trained, both “matured” into styles of painting capturing the dramatic visual essence of their homeland – Valencia and the Mediterranean Sea. They have both been described as “painters of the Light”; some have said, “of the Light of the South”, that is, the southern coast of Spain. It is the overwhelming influence of Sorolla blended with his own style that make Royo’s masterful treatment of the Mediterranean subjects both haunting and mysterious, yet full of raw power at the same time. The sweeping brush strokes, bold swaths of color, and heavy impasto capture the eye and draw one inward until that final absolute moment of awareness that one is actually there in the scene feeling the light and the heat of the sun, the salt and sea spray, and hearing the crash of the surf. Royo conveys not merely image, but mood and atmosphere as well. This is rare in today’s art world, hence the connoisseur is compelled to compare with the old masters. Thus, the appeal of Royo’s work for today’s collector becomes obvious.

This image of Saint John of the Cross, is without a doubt, the best known of all Dali’s religious works. The work was inspired by a drawing by Saint John of the Cross who experienced this rapturous vision of Christ and which is kept in the Monastery of the Incarnation in Avila [Spain]. Dali believed Saint John of the Cross to be “the greatest lyric exponent of this Spanish mysticism which I now bring back to life“.

“From far-off times, people have been and still are, afraid of the fallen head of Jesus dead. But this devotion, this fearful piety, is felt by the people only in its tragic and cruel reality, never in its holiness and greatness…. We can appreciate that every representation of Christ in the cross, emphasizes the blows, the bruises, the marks, the spears, the horrible muscular contractions…. There is not one Passion which depicts the God; they only show the man… This is because nobody can depict the fallen but victorious God, because there exists no human brain that can understand such great concept….” Garcia Lorca The Christs [1918]
