HalloWEEK, our favorite week of the year is back! Starting 7 days before Halloween, we post pictures of our family dressed in costumes. Our 7 costumes from last year can be found here: HalloWEEK 2015
DAY 1: ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY
Reed is dressed as Ron Burgurdy and Kat is Veronica Corningstone from the movie “Anchorman” starring Will Ferrell. Reed’s clothes including jacket, shirt and tie were all from the Goodwill and Kat already owned the shirt and vest (the question is…why?). Reed shaved his robust beard in stages for HalloWEEK, leaving this handsome mustache in it’s wake. Ronan didn’t participate too much this day because kid, you can’t win ’em all!
DAY 2: MARRIED WITH CHILDREN
Reed is dressed as a grumbling Al Bundy, Kat is dressed as Peggy Bundy and Ronan (a boy) is dressed as Kelly Bundy from the sitcom “Married with Children“. We’re saving for Ronan’s therapy now! We’ve learned that Reed has an extremely malleable face when it comes to looking hapless and it’s possible that Kat was Peggy Bundy in another life. All clothes courtesy of the Goodwill. Cost approximately $ 24 for everything including the knock-off Member’s Only jacket and snazzy silk tie.
DAY 3: OVERBOARD !
Kat is dressed as the iconic Queen of Mean, the b*tch of the high seas Goldie Hawn as Joanna/Annie in “Overboard“. Reed plays the role of Kurt Russell’s character Dean Proffitt and Ronan is one of his filthy, mischievous kids, Joey. This bathing suit was particularly uncomfortable for Kat for many reasons and she has learned to order one-pieces a size larger than she normally wears. Her lady bits may never be the same again. Moving on….
DAY 4: NOVEMBER RAIN
HalloWEEK Day 4 is an ode to Guns N’ Roses sad-sack video “November Rain” from 1991. Reed is dressed as Axl Rose, Kat is dressed as Stephanie Seymour and Ronan is dressed as guitarist Slash. There was a level of agony getting Ronan to dress up in this costume. Two year olds don’t like afro wigs and they express that sentiment by throwing the wig, then themselves, to the floor. Never again.
DAY 5: KENNY ROGERS, DOLLY PARTON AND THE GAMBLER
Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers will always be some of the all time favorite musicians of the Horth household, including their duet “Islands in the Stream”. Ronan was a perfect fit to be “The Gambler” from Kenny Roger’s greatest hit of that name. This was actually the first series of photos that we took because Reed still had a beard, of which we spray painted grey along with his wig. We had all of the clothes including the wigs which had previously been used for Marie Antoinette and Kurt Cobain. Ronan was woken up from a nap right before we tried to take the family photo and was was not amused by any of it. Never again. On another note: Reed IS Kenny Rogers. Every picture he took was so good, we had no idea which ones to use.
DAY 6: BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID
This was the second set of photos that we did, featuring Reed and Ronan as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, the swoon-worthy film from 1969 starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The photos were taken at Kat’s parent’s farm in Miami. And seriously, who doesn’t love a little boy in a cowboy outfit? *Melty Heart*. Ronan was actually quite content during this series of photos, though it was nearly impossible to keep the cowboy hat on him. Eventually he’ll wear things on his head. Maybe.
When this concept first came up, we talked about Kat being Dr. Frank N Furter from the 1975 film “Rocky Horror Picture Show” but the idea was quickly dismissed as 1. It would not be funny and 2. It would not be true to the film. It took a little while for Reed to get on board with the idea of being the notorious “Transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania” in fishnet stockings but as soon as he did, we wrangled up the costume and got to work. Kat also opted to be Riff Raff instead of one of the female roles, as it would also be out of her comfort zone to be dressed so hideously. Of course, Ronan played the role of Rocky because from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet, he looks just like the golden-haired Adonis.
A little more about HalloWEEK:
We have been planning the costumes this entire year and every time an idea popped into our head, we kept it in a drafts folder in our email. By August we narrowed down roughly 25 ideas to 7 and started collecting costumes, wigs and accessories. Surprisingly, a lot of the clothes we already had and simply supplemented what was missing. We went to Goodwill for the majority of the missing items and to a few Halloween stores for wigs and accessories. Amazon Prime is also a great source from some last-minute items we were missing. In total we had 21 costumes between the 3 of us so it took a lot of coordination.
In addition to the blog, the daily HalloWEEK pictures and videos can be found on our Instagram page found here: INSTAGRAM (handle: robin_rile_fine_art)
As we are both kids of the 80’s and 90’s, a lot of the HalloWEEK costumes this year were odes to TV shows and music of our favorite 80’s and 90’s stars. It has been a labor of love but as complete Halloween nuts, something we truly enjoy doing.
Here is a video for Anchorman:
