One of MacDonald’s most dynamic and athletic works. Modeled and inspired by Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, MacDonald allegorically portrays her as the mythical “Diana”. In Roman mythology, Diana (lt. “heavenly” or “divine”) was the goddess of the hunt, the moon and birthing, being associated with wild animals and woodland, and having the power to talk to and control animals.

This was the original modele (1990) for what later became known as “The Gymnast: Flair Across America” created for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. “Flair Across America” celebrates the triumph of the human spirit and the idealization of the human form while promoting an appreciation for the arts within diverse communities. At a height of twenty-six feet, the massive sculpture of a gymnast highlights the athletes struggle and ultimate triumph, representing the power and heroic determination that inspire Olympians to excel. This work is one of only 10 bronzes on this scale to be completed in the original edition. Later editions from 1996 had different bases, clothing and details.
