The Sculptures of M. J Talbot

artist michael james talbot sculpture

Artist Michael James Talbot Ophelia SculptureBritish sculptor M.J Talbot resonates with art collectors due, in part, to his profound understanding of the human body and unique juxtaposition of classical and modern figural motifs. Talbot’s meticulously detailed female forms pierce flat planes of bronze, simplifying, and almost masking the figure. His male forms freeze mid-flight, muscles taught in intense concentration.

Talbot’s background in sculpture dates back several decades to when he received his Bachelors in arts and a scholarship to London’s premier Royal Academy of Arts. His post graduate studies and subsequent concentration in classical sculpture won him the prestigious Landseer prize in 1983. Further studies at the Sir Henry Doulton Sculpture School solidified his position as an internationally renowned sculptor. Later, M.J Talbot was elected to become a member of England’s Royal Academy of British Sculptors and has since become a member of the National Sculpture Society.Artist Michael James Talbot Seraphina Sculpture

Talbot has created several collections of bronzes based on central themes such as dance and the modernization of classical figures. His “Royal Ballet Collection” was inspired by the dancers of London’s Royal Ballet. After tedious study of the human form, Talbot’s detailed sculptures of the dancer’s poise and posture was achieved by working intimately with the dancers themselves. Taking a fleeting moment and solidifying it into a permanent statement takes an intimate understanding not only of the physical attributes of dancers, but also the joy which can only be conveyed through dance. Directors of the Royal Ballet assisted the sculptor further by analyzing the works in progress and making minute adjustments for the final sculptures. From inception to completion, Talbot is intimately involved in the creation of each sculpture. Created in clay then cast into small editions of bronze, the patina of each work is unique, and applied by the artist himself. They create a dizzying, organic pattern that can only be achieved through years of experimentation with bronze patination.

M.J Talbot’s “Emergent Collection” is perhaps his most artistic departure from classical sculpting of the human form to creating works which resonate with both collectors of traditional and modern art. First sculpting the figures in the round, he fixed their pose before covering much of their bodies with fixed planes, resulting in voyeuristic poses which highlight only certain parts of the female form.
