Salvador Dali’s “Chess Set”

Salvador Dali Chess set made with casts of his fingers

In 1968, The American Chess Foundation approached Master Dali with the idea of creating a chess set in honor of Dali’s friend and chess partner Marcel Duchamp, who died earlier in the same year. Dali designed the set using molds of his own fingers and those of his wife Gala, as well as salt-shakers from New York’s St. Regis Hotel.

This set, numbered was one of only approximately 11 sets cast in 1986 in conjunction with Dali and The Barclay Gallery/Meisner Foundry, is patinaed in silver plate and polished bronze. This set comes with a marble board (pictured), as well as a custom-made plexiglass display case. It has been authenticated by the Salvador Dali Archives in New York (2017). At least 3 sets are in museums, including The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL (USA) and the Montreal Museum of Art in Quebec, Canada.
