RETNA is the pseudonym for graffiti artist Marquis Lewis (American, b. 1979) who combines his own creative scripts, resembling runes and calligraphy, into a unique visual language only decipherable to eyes trained to do so. His mysterious hybridization of scripts sit somewhere between Hebrew, Arabic, and western writing, are “sui generis”, (in a class by itself). His forms are rhythmic and contemplative and make the viewer sit still, examine and interpret, much like books themselves.
