One of the most intellectually engaging prints by Banksy, Sale Ends (v.2) (2017) transforms a dramatic religious composition into a sharp critique of modern consumer culture. Adapted from a 19th-century engraving by Gustave Doré, the work depicts figures reaching in reverence toward a bold red sign reading “SALE ENDS TODAY,” replacing the traditional sacred subject with a symbol of retail urgency.
The result is a striking and ironic commentary on contemporary society—where devotion has shifted from faith to commerce. The juxtaposition of classical imagery with bold graphic text is quintessential Banksy: visually immediate, culturally resonant, and layered with meaning.
Executed as a screenprint in 2017 and published through Banksy’s original print infrastructure, the work exemplifies the artist’s ability to translate his street-based visual language into highly collectible editioned works. The crisp registration, rich red field, and finely preserved engraving detail reflect the technical quality associated with these releases.
This example is hand-signed and numbered from the edition of 500 and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the Pest Control Office, the artist’s official authentication authority.
