Eva Muducci (After Munch) by Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol Eva Mudocci (after Munch) unique screenprint on paper

Andy Warhol’s Eva Mudocci (After Munch), 1984, is a rare and striking work from a small, unpublished series of unique screenprints that pay homage to Edvard Munch’s emotionally charged portraiture. Originally based on Munch’s 1903 lithograph of the same name—believed to depict the violinist and Munch’s muse Eva Mudocci—Warhol reinterprets the image through his signature pop lens. With flowing lines and haunting expression, Warhol heightens the psychological intensity of the sitter by layering expressive hand-drawn strokes over bold, surreal color combinations. In this unique variant, the electric vermilion and cobalt blue outlining her cascading hair contrasts against a muted ochre field, while soft turquoise and lilac tones lend the portrait a dreamlike quality. The palette is uniquely Warholian—visually arresting, emotionally aloof, yet strangely tender.

This piece is part of Warhol’s late-career “After Munch” series, which also included reinterpretations of The Scream and Madonna and Self-Portrait with Skeleton Arm. Created in collaboration with the Munch Museum in Oslo, the series reflects Warhol’s deepening interest in mortality and artistic legacy. As Warhol once stated, “When you do something exactly wrong, you always turn up something,” and this work exemplifies that philosophy—remixing an iconic Expressionist image into something simultaneously contemporary and timeless. At 40 x 32 inches and fully glued to foam core, this screenprint is presented under glass and remains in apparently very good condition. With its distinct colorway and hand-finished flair, this piece stands out as both a collector’s rarity and a moving meditation on beauty, identity, and the haunting persistence of the past.
