Photographs from O’Neill & Parkinson

Fashion Photography Icons Raquel Welch

We are pleased to share two remarkable works that bring together some of the most iconic figures of the 20th century, both behind and in front of the camera. Terry O’Neill and Norman Parkinson each redefined the art of celebrity and fashion photography, capturing their subjects with an immediacy and glamour that has made their images timeless. O’Neill’s provocative portrait of Raquel Welch and Parkinson’s luminous depiction of Audrey Hepburn remind us why these women remain enduring cultural icons, and why the photographers themselves hold such an essential place in the history of modern photography.

Terry O’Neill’s Raquel Welch from ‘One Million Years B.C.’ is among the photographer’s most iconic celebrity portraits, capturing Welch in a provocative crucifix pose that fuses glamour, controversy, and star power. O’Neill, famed for redefining celebrity portraiture in the 1960s and ’70s, worked closely with Welch at the height of her career, immortalizing her as both Hollywood siren and cultural symbol. This gelatin silver print, signed by both O’Neill and Welch and numbered 35/50, epitomizes his ability to stage cinema-like compositions that, as he once said, sought to “photograph fame itself.” Published on the cover of The Sunday Times Magazine (1998) and featured in Celebrity: The Photographs of Terry O’Neill (2003), the image remains a striking commentary on celebrity, spectacle, and iconography.

Norman Parkinson’s Audrey Hepburn with Flowers II (Rome, 1955) captures the actress at the height of her elegance, framed against a lush cascade of pink blossoms that mirror her timeless grace. Parkinson, celebrated for bringing fashion photography out of the studio and into vivid, natural settings, here transforms Hepburn into both muse and icon, an embodiment of post-war glamour and modern femininity. This archival pigment print, editioned 2/21 and issued by the Norman Parkinson Archives, exemplifies his mastery of color and composition, with what Parkinson once described as “the movement and the moment” animating every frame. Accompanied by full archive certification, it remains a radiant testament to the collaboration of one of cinema’s greatest stars and one of fashion’s most legendary photographers.
