Andy Warhol’s Martha Graham series

Andy WARHOL- Martha Graham Portfolio of dance themed prints

Warhol’s Martha Graham series (F&S II.387-389) is a rare and poetic tribute to the queen of modern dance. Executed in 1986 and published by the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance, this complete portfolio features three bold, large-format screenprints (36 x 36 in.)—each hand-signed by Warhol on the verso and numbered from the edition of 100.

The portfolio captures Martha Graham mid-motion in dynamic poses drawn from her most iconic performances. In Letter to the World (The Kick), we see a forceful double portrait of Graham in turquoise and violet—a nod to the expressive dualities within her choreography. Lamentation channels grief and elegance in a sculptural drapery of deep plum and lavender. And in Letter to the World (The Leap), Graham soars across the composition in a rose-pink dress, embodying flight, strength, and grace.

Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, with his blindstamp, this edition is increasingly scarce on the market. One set is currently listed at $245,000. Ours is available well below that, representing one of the best value opportunities for a complete Warhol edition from the late period.
