Few artists have created a visual language as instantly recognizable as Fernando Botero (1932–2023). The celebrated Colombian master transformed ordinary moments into extraordinary scenes through his unmistakable use of exaggerated proportions, gentle humor, and an affectionate understanding of human nature.
Robin Rile Fine Art is delighted to present two charming original drawings from 2007 and 2009, each capturing the wit and personality that made Botero one of Latin America’s most beloved artists.
The first, dated 2007, depicts a robust gentleman carrying a woman in his arms. The composition is playful and theatrical, with Botero’s characteristic rounded figures lending an unexpected tenderness to the scene. There’s a delightful ambiguity to the relationship, inviting viewers to imagine the story unfolding.
The second, dated 2009, features a gentleman and woman seated together at a table, seemingly enjoying a leisurely drink. Their exaggerated proportions, expressive faces, and casual surroundings transform an everyday encounter into a wonderfully humorous portrait of companionship.
Both drawings are executed in black marker on paper, measuring 30.5 × 23.7 cm (12 × 9⅜ inches) each, and are signed and dated. Their confident, economical linework demonstrates Botero’s remarkable ability to convey personality and narrative without relying on color or elaborate detail.
The works share a distinguished reported provenance through the Francisco Quintana Calderon Art Gallery in Bogotá, Colombia, and the Patricia Chaparro Private Collection in Paris, France.
While each drawing stands beautifully on its own, together they offer an engaging dialogue between two intimate human encounters. Their complementary subjects and modest dimensions make them particularly appealing for collectors seeking original works by one of the twentieth century’s most distinctive figurative artists.
Both drawings are available individually or as a pair through Robin Rile Fine Art.
