Among the largest and most compositionally ambitious works in the series, Roommates layers a reclining nude, a dramatically cropped female face and a complex interior into multiple overlapping planes. Lichtenstein deliberately destabilizes conventional perspective, allowing figure, architecture and pattern to compete for attention. At nearly five feet tall, the work has extraordinary physical presence and stands among the most sophisticated examples of his late printmaking.
