Alexandre Nicolas (French, b. 1970)

Alexandre with HitlerfoetusAlexandre Nicolas was born in 1970 in Toulouse where he still lives and works. He received his diploma in fine arts from l’école des Beaux Arts de Toulouse in 1997. Nicolas creates large ephemeral sculptures from sand and ice. It was during this creative process that the artist cultivated his love for the stage and his fascination with the modeling of raw materials. These experiences led him to search for new materials, until his discovery of synthetic crystal. Alexandra Nicolas found that this material, along with resin, created a suspension in time. It is a perfectly translucent material which is also exceptionally solid, presenting a true technological feet, freezing objects in a moment. Alexandre Nicolas wanted to work on his personal icons and super heroes who are, for him, transcriptions of modern mythology. The fetus evokes genesis, the moment of conception. It is the representation of a being predestined to save humanity or destroy it. The object floats in the resin but is simultaneously imprisoned by the technology, acting as a mirror of our consumer society. Nicolas wants to start a dialogue with the viewer, to provoke him and put him face to face with these contradictions. His work offers a sarcastic point of view with a moral background.
