Peter Anton’s Sweet Tooth

Peter Anton (American, b.1963) is a renowned sculptor and artist who was born in New Haven, CT. He mainly focuses on food, especially on chocolates and other kinds of sweets. He makes giant naturalistic sculptures, and is famous for his boxed chocolates. Occasionally, his studio can appear like a sweet shop, as it is filled with many real treats, which he uses as models. He starts with the process of eating, feeling, smelling, dissecting, and studying a new food repeatedly so as to familiarize himself with a new subject. He then embarks on the tedious and long process of carving, sculpting, sanding, constructing, and painting his assorted media works.

In 1993, Anton appeared at the Henri Gallery, located in Washington, D.C., for his first show. His first solo exhibition in New York took place at Bruce R. Lewin Gallery in 1995, which featured 70 large-scale fruits and vegetables. He proceeded to appear in more solo exhibitions at the gallery. He also had solo shows at Urban Art in Seoul, Allan Stone Projects in New York, Hammer Galleries in New York, Galerie Terminus in Munich, and Galerie Schriever in Cologne.

Anton’s work has been featured in group shows in the United States and overseas. This includes shows held at Museum Villa Rot in Germany, the Austin Museum of Art in Texas, the Hudson River Museum in New York, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, the Castellani Art Museum in New York, the Elaine Baker Gallery in Florida, the Keszler Gallery in New York, and the COPIA Museum in Napa Valley. Galerie Terminus represented him at the Palm Beach art fair, Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Cologne, and the Venice International Art Fair. Anton’s work is also featured in corporate and private collections, such as those belonging to Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s CEO, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, Oppenheim Bank, Breitling Watches, and Perfetti Van Melle.
